Artykuł recenzowany / Peer-reviewed articleThis article is an attempt to analyse the most important phenomena in two decades, from the viewpoint of the development of the media market. First decade (1989-1999) is the period in which only the “old media” was used (to a small extent - the "new"); in the second period (first decade of the XXI century) the development of new technologies has accelerated, and the growth of the Internet began to determine most of the changes occurring in this period. These changes were in the areas of media system, communication, culture and new social habits. In this terms, the real growth came with the development of broadband Internet connections at the end of XX century. But for some reasons its dissemination was not as dynamic as in many other European countries.Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą konfrontacji najważniejszych z punktu widzenia rozwoju rynku polskich mediów po 1989 roku zjawisk, związanych z rozwojem Internetu. Analiza obejmuje dwie dekady. Pierwsza obejmuje lata 1989-1999, czyli okres użytkowania głownie „starych mediów” (w niewielkim stopniu mediów "nowych"); druga (pierwsza dekada XXI wieku) dotyczy dynamicznego rozwoju nowych technologii i samego Internetu, który zaczął określać większość zachodzących wówczas zmian, przede wszystkim w obszarze systemu mediów, komunikacji, kultury oraz nowych zachowań społecznych. The image of Ukrainians in Polish print media – selected examples

Publikacja recenzowana / Peer-reviewed publicationAutor artykułu przybliża problematykę związaną z wizerunkiem Ukraińców na łamach polskiej prasy, w oparciu o kilka istotnych jego zdaniem zdarzeń, których efektem było włączenie ogólnej tematyki ukraińskiej w dyskurs publiczny. Pierwszym z nich jest stosunek Polaków do pracujących w Polsce Ukrainek, drugim – rewolucja na kijowskim Majdanie, trzecim zaś problem edukacji cudzoziemców w Polsce. Autor skupia się na przekazach prasowych (lokalnych i krajowych), jako wciąż podstawowych determinantach stymulujących ton i jakość publicznej dyskusji. Zaskakujące, iż wspomniane tematy wywołały specyficzną narrację, opartą w dużej mierze na stereotypach, choć w większości kwestie te wynikły właśnie z takiego postrzegania Ukraińców. Z tego też względu niezwykle interesującym, zdaniem Autora, był sposób prowadzenia medialnej narracji, uwarunkowany głównie ideologicznym nachyleniem danego tytułu prasowego lub niedostatecznym pogłębieniem przedstawianego problemuThis article introduces the problems connected with the image of Ukrainians in the Polish press, based on some important events that led to the inclusion of this subject for public discourse. The first of it was the attitude of Poles to Ukrainians working in Poland, the second – revolution on Kiev’s Maidan, and the third – problem of education of foreigners in Poland, especially Ukrainians. The author focuses on the press articles (on local and national coverage), because press is still the main determinant of stimulating the tone and quality of public discussion. Surprising that these topics caused a specific narrative, which was largely based on stereotypes, although most of these issues arose precisely from such a perception of Ukrainians. Therefore extremely interesting, according to the author, was the way of conducting narration in newspapers and magazines, mainly determined by the ideological inclination of the press, or insufficient deepening of the depicted problems

In the Culture of Media, in Media with no Culture – Political Speech as an Impuls of Public Pseudo-debate

The political culture in the Polish media coverage, due to its low level, is one of the most difficult issues in the public debate. Today, media culture (and the culture in media) is determined by the mutual behavior of politicians and journalists. Especially journalists, who are more deeply dependent on politicians and topics bounced by their for public pseudo-discussion. The quality of journalists work is in straight relation to the language of contemporary politics and the media issues are created based on even the most trivial impulse, which is sent to them. Thus, the language of the media is reduced to the level imposed by the language of politics and the culture in the media undergoes the dictates of political life. Therefore, the overriding problem is the transfer of information based on the criterion of social (not political) interests, and not the implementation of the communication chain of artificial issues, which, thanks to the political signals become part of media culture.Tekst stanowi zestawienie faktu upadku kultury medialnej, w sferze obyczajów, norm zachowań i postępującej brutalizacji języka debaty publicznej, z aktywnością polityczną i stylem dziennikarskiego przekazu. Choć są to zjawiska dość dobrze identyfikowane, znacznie więcej mówi się dziś o potrzebie poprawy tego języka, zdecydowanie mniej zaś działa w kierunku zmian na lepsze. Dotyczy to zarówno środków przekazu osadzonych w tzw. głównym nurcie (mainstream), jak i nowych mediów, komunikujących w językowym nieładzie i epatujących werbalnym brutalizmem. Stoi to w sprzeczności z jakością pracy dziennikarzy (także, a może szczególnie, w wydaniu internetowym), co decydować powinno o poziomie publicznej debaty, z którą kojarzy się dziś takie pojęcia, jak wolność ekspresji, pluralizm poglądów czy kultura polityczna. Nowoczesna rodzina we współczesnym dyskursie kulturowym – na przykładzie amerykańskich seriali

Praca recenzowana / peer-reviewed paperW tekście autor przybliża obraz rodziny przedstawiony we współczesnych serialach amerykańskich, skupiając się na ich roli w kształtowaniu nowoczesnego jej wizerunku. Najlepszą egzemplifikacją zmiany modelu rodziny jest stopniowe włączanie homoseksualnych wątków oraz, w niektórych przypadkach, umieszczanie par jednopłciowych jako głównych bohaterów. Tekst opiera się na przykładach pierwszych lub najbardziej popularnych seriali od końca XX wieku. Uwzględniona w nim została specyfika bohaterów, kontekst, w jakim pojawiają się wątki homoseksualne oraz ich znaczenie dla fabuły. Wymienione elementy, ale i inne opisane przez autora zjawiska, to niewątpliwie olbrzymi znaczeniowo krok w inicjowaniu kulturowych zmian w amerykańskim, ale nie tylko, społeczeństwie.In this text the Author describes the family picture presented in modern American TV series, focusing on their role related to the shaping of its modern image. The best exemplification of changes in the family model is the gradual inclusion of gay themes and, in some cases, putting of same-sex couples as the main characters. The text is based on the examples of the first or the most popular TV series of the late twentieth century. The author take into account the specifics of the characters, the context in which homosexual themes appears and their importance to the whole story. These elements, but also other phenomena described by the author, are undoubtedly utmost importance to initiate a cultural change in the U.S. (but not limited to) society in recent years

Centrality dependence of global variables in relativistic heavy ion collisions: Final pTp_{T} data analysis in the framework of a statistical model

The global variables like the transverse energy at midrapidity, the charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity and the total multiplicity of charged particles are evaluated in the single-freeze-out statistical model for different centrality bins at RHIC at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ and 200 GeV. Full description of decays of hadron resonances is applied in these estimations. The geometric parameters of the model are obtained from the fit to the final data on the $p_{T}$ spectra. The predicted values of the global variables agree qualitatively well with the experimental data. The centrality independence of the total number of charged particles per participant pair has been also reproduced.Comment: Revtex, 12 figures (included), 16 pages. This is the revised final version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. The main difference with the first version is that the geometric parameters of the model have been fitted again with the use of the newer estimates of the statistical parameters reported in Refs. NUMERICAL SIMULATION AND CO-SIMULATION IN ANALYSIS OF MANIPULATORS’ DYNAMICS

Application of general purpose computing environments to analysis of manipulators’ dynamics gives ability to select elastically the model structure and analysis algorithms, as well as full access to the intermediate results, however, it often requires introduction of various simplifications of the model under consideration. The alternative approach consists in application of the specialized software packages that allow the use of more sophisticated models, but at the cost of restricted access to the intermediate results as well as the limited range of possible modifications of models and solution algorithms. The authors focused on application of the co-simulation technique in analysis of manipulators’ dynamics. Co-simulation consists in application of specialized software packages to formulation of the dynamic model. Next, the model is simulated with use of a general purpose computing environment and co-operating specialized software package. The authors used Matlab/Simulink computing environment and MD ADAMS software package. The paper presents comparison of results, problems of application, as well as remarks on educational applicability of manipulator dynamics analysis with use of the simulation and the co-simulation techniques. Two examples of a manipulator dynamics modelling were considered. One example with a considerably simplified mass spatial distribution, and another one with a mass distribution corresponding to a real commercial manipulator. The achieved analysis results confirmed that application of the co-simulation technique eases the use of complex models in analysis of manipulator dynamics with use of the general purpose computing environments

Pursuing colloidal diamond

The endeavor to selectively fabricate cubic diamond is challenging due to the formation of competing phases such as its hexagonal polymorph or others possessing similar free energy. The necessity to achieve that is of paramount importance, since the cubic diamond is the only polymorph exhibiting a complete photonic bandgap making it a promising candidate in view of photonic applications. Herein, we demonstrate that due to the presence of external field and delicate manipulation of its strength we can attain the selectivity in the formation of cubic diamond in a one-component system comprised of designer tetrahedral patchy particles. The driving force of such phenomena is the structure of the first adlayer which is commensurate with (110) face of the cubic diamond. Moreover, after a successful nucleation event, once the external field is turned off, the structure remains stable, paving an avenue for a further post-synthetic treatment
